I'M A COMPLETE BEGINNER IS THIS OK?
99% of our students come to us as complete beginners.

Our classes are aimed towards the complete beginner and we teach you everything step by step.

We have multi pole studios and 2 instructors. Take a look at our timetables on the CLASSES page for the sessions that are specifically for beginners.

The classes are set out so that you are in a class suitable for your ability / level.

I’VE DONE POLE DANCING BEFORE. ARE YOUR CLASSES SUITABLE FOR ME?
Yes we teach from the complete beginner to advanced.

We have multi pole studios and 2 instructors so we split every class so you will be in a class with people of the same ability.

Please note that to comply with insurance regulations, you will have to complete 6 sessions with York Pole Dance Academy before been permitted to invert regardless of your level / experience. This is a universal regulation and applies to all pole dance schools.

DOES IT MATTER THAT I'M UNFIT, OLDER, NOT SKINNY, NERVOUS, SHY, NO RHYTHM or CAN’T DANCE etc?
Please do not worry!

We have age ranges from 18 - 60+.
The women we teach come in all shapes and sizes – many students are new mums wanting to lose baby weight.

Generally it’s women wanting to tone up, wanting to try something more fun than the gym. You come to us to get fit so don’t worry about your fitness levels- we start you off very easy/basic.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any upper body strength as this is completely normal – not many girls do. It’s something that builds up gradually through pole dancing.

Everyone is very nervous / shy to start with. Most students actually start classes alone.

Please remember that you will not be asked to do anything you do not want and our instructors are extremely experienced, friendly, qualified and supportive.

Our classes are run with disco/club lighting which creates a great atmosphere. We find it helps with our more self conscious students. No studio mirrors or bright lighting.

The classes are designed to improve confidence, fitness levels and overall body shape.

WILL POLE DANCING TONE ME UP?
Yes! You will probably feel very achy after your first few classes and may have a few bruises too. This is because pole dancing is an all over workout.

The spins and holds really focus on problem areas like arms (bingo wings) and core. The dancing part is the cardio which aids weight loss and improves fitness levels.

The fun / social element is what makes pole dancing with us different to any other exercise – its easy to keep it up and its enjoyable.

ARE THE CLASSES AIMED AT AMATEURS FOR FITNESS OR GIRLS WANTING TO BECOME DANCERS?
Our classes are aimed at amateurs wanting to learn to pole dance for fitness and fun.

I’D LIKE TO WORK AS A PROFESSIONAL DANCER ARE THE CLASSES FOR ME?
If you are wanting to become a professional dancer you would benefit from our classes.

IS POLE DANCING SAFE?

Unfortunately this is a question we cannot answer, all we can do is tell you what health and safety steps we take to cut down any risks. Unfortunately risks cannot be eliminated.

We are a PDC approved school. The Pole Dance community recognises legitimate professionally run pole dance schools.

Your Instructors are both qualified with the CPD REP’s Register of Exercise Professionals and Skills Active endorsed qualifications in pole fitness, insured, have over 10 years experience and are fully first aid trained (including dance specific injuries). All of our certificates are available to view on the ABOUT US page.
We are a PDC (Pole Dance Community) approved school and they also have a copy of all the
our qualifications, public liability, professional indemnity certificates and first aid qualifications.

The poles we use are X-poles and X-stages which are deemed ‘suitable safe poles’ by both PDC and insurance companies

Crash mats (min 2” thickness) are used for all inverted moves and your instructors have the relevant silver intermediate CPD REPs qualification needed to teach inverted pole dance moves.

All students are required to complete 6 weeks of lessons before attempting any inverted moves.

We do not give students a pole each so it means you are supervised & spotted properly by an instructor.

We get all students to fill in a health questionnaire prior to taking part to check you are fit and healthy enough to take part. If unsure of your suitability please consult your doctor.

POLE DANCING & PREGNANCY?
Our pole dance classes are not suitable for pregnant women.

With your doctors consent you can start pole dancing lessons 3 months after having your baby or 6 months after a C section.

PRE – EXISTING INJURIES?

You will be asked to fill in a heath questionnaire prior to taking part in our classes. Should you have any pre-existing injuries or if you have had any recent surgery, please check with your doctor that you are OK to take part.

WHAT IS THE POLE DANCE COMMUNITY (PDC) CODE OF CONDUCT?
York Pole Dance Academy is a PDC approved pole dance school.

Both our instructors are PDC level 3 instructors and PDC Advancement and Accreditation Grading Assessors.

The PDC code of conduct is a set of rules to help ensure that the UK pole dancing industry achieves high standards. The PDC recognises legitimate professionally run pole dance schools.

The Pole Dance Community (PDC) ensures best practise within the fitness pole dancing industry. Approved schools have each provided proof of their insurance, experience, safe practice and fair pricing. They represent the best you could wish from a pole dance school.

The code of conduct covers all areas of pole dancing from a maximum of 3 students per pole to ensuring that only poles that are deemed 'safe' by PDC are used with the correct distances between poles that are cleaned and maintained correctly. PDC Instructors will operate wholly within the laws applicable to them in their own jurisdiction and PDC Instructors will endeavour to provide a safe environment for their students.
